# How Ember works

How a day changes on the calendar, and who can see a note. Kept days have another way in. The files can come with you.

## A day

One Friday, from the plan before it to the day you keep.

### When

The chip on Friday changes on its own. Warming while the day is ahead, glowing once it has passed, ember after you keep it.

[Plans and memories on one calendar](https://www.embering.us/features/the-calendar.md)

- [Fade](https://www.embering.us/features/the-calendar.md#fade): Ends a plan that never happened, without removing the day.
- [Search](https://www.embering.us/features/the-calendar.md#search): Reads the writing on a day, including voice transcripts.
- [Filters](https://www.embering.us/features/the-calendar.md#filters): By state, hearth, media, or what is waiting on you.
- [Timeline view](https://www.embering.us/features/the-calendar.md#timeline): The same days as a grid or as a running list.

### Keeping a day

A memory needs a day and one thing on it. The title can wait. There is no field marked incomplete, and Ember will not prompt you a week later to finish it.

[What a memory holds](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md)

- [The story](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md#story): What happened, written whenever you get to it. One level of replies.
- [Asides](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md#asides): The line that does not belong in the story, kept anyway.
- [Voice notes](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md#voice-notes): Recorded on the day, transcribed, and searchable.
- [Tags](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md#tags): Your own words on a day.
- [One per day](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md#split-days): Photos from different days as one memory, or one each.
- [Copy memory](https://www.embering.us/features/capturing.md#copy-memory): A new day from one you already set up.

### Who sees what

A mantel is one shelf. Everyone on it is looking at the same history. Inside that, a single entry can be narrower: private to you, open on a date you pick, or covered until someone chooses to reveal it.

[Who sees what](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md)

- [Private notes](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#private): A note only you can see, optionally set to open later.
- [Guests](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#guests): Can look, cannot add, and never take a seat.
- [Double Take](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#double-take): One question about a day, answered separately, opened together.
- [Hidden from guests](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#hidden-from-guests): Visible to members, invisible to guests.
- [Invite](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#invites): A member link and a guest link, both removable before use.
- [Updates](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#updates): What changed on the mantel since you last looked.
- [Your color](https://www.embering.us/features/who-sees-what.md#your-color): The colored dot beside your name on what you added.

## More days

Once a mantel has a stretch of days, there are other ways in than the calendar.

### Where

Some days you remember the street and not the month. The map is for those.

[Where it happened](https://www.embering.us/features/places.md)

- [Label](https://www.embering.us/features/places.md#labels): Your own name for a place, on this memory only.
- [Your places](https://www.embering.us/features/places.md#your-places): The places you name once and pick again.

### Hearths

A trip is several memories. A hearth holds the run without collapsing them into one entry.

[Days that belong together](https://www.embering.us/features/hearths.md)

- [Link memories](https://www.embering.us/features/hearths.md#link-memories): Days go into a hearth by hand, and come back out the same way.

### Wander

Wander is a tab you open. The days you kept stay on the calendar, and this is the other way through them.

[Find it again](https://www.embering.us/features/resurfacing.md)

- [Wander Path](https://www.embering.us/features/resurfacing.md#wander-path): This date in other years first, then wider, then further back.
- [On this day](https://www.embering.us/features/resurfacing.md#highlights): On this day, Around this date, then More to wander.

### Ember Frame

Ember Frame needs no account on the screen it runs on. A postcard is a file with a front and a back.

[A screen in the room](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md)

- [Postcards](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#postcards): One memory or a whole hearth, laid out as a card.
- [The song on a day](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#song): One track attached to a memory, and to its postcard.
- [Sensitive](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#sensitive): A photo or a line that stays covered until it is asked for.
- [Pair](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#pair): A six digit code on the screen, typed into your phone.
- [Cast](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#cast): Cast from your phone instead of pairing a code.
- [What it plays](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#frame-sources): Favorites, a hearth, a stretch of dates, or everything kept.
- [Keep off the frame](https://www.embering.us/features/frame-and-postcards.md#frame-holdback): One photo or one memory, left off Frame.

## Take them with you

Who holds an invite, what an export is made of, and the 30 days after a douse.

The only way onto a mantel is an invite you sent. You can take that invite back.

An export is a zip, or a few if the mantel is large: a folder per day, holding your original photo and video files at the size you uploaded them, and the writing as a Markdown file you can open in anything.

Douse a memory or close your account and you have 30 days to change your mind. Ember lists what goes before you confirm, and keeps no copy after.

No cap on how many memories, photos, or videos a mantel can hold.

### Export

Your original files, as many times as you like.

[Yours to take](https://www.embering.us/features/your-memories.md)

- [Douse](https://www.embering.us/features/your-memories.md#douse): Removes a memory, with 30 days to change your mind.
- [Leaving a mantel](https://www.embering.us/features/your-memories.md#leave): What happens to a shared history when one person goes.
- [New mantel](https://www.embering.us/features/your-memories.md#multiple-mantels): One account can be on several, and they never mix.
- [Passkey](https://www.embering.us/features/your-memories.md#passkeys): Face or fingerprint on the device, instead of an emailed code.
